I Found A Rose In The Devil's Garden... * A Parisian Goldenbird Spin-Off * ... by A. Elmgren

Scene 1. "All That Whispers Ain't God"

I presuppose that there are three kinds of thoughts in me: that is, one my own, which springs from my mere liberty and will; and two others, which come from without, one from the good spirit, and the other from the bad. ~ Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola, XII:III

Scene 2. "Des Tous Petits Petons" or; "Pardon My French"

Notes: The French frivolities were borrowed from Maurice Chevalier's 1924 hit "Valentine". It is a very silly song.

Scene 3. "Ce n’est que Madelon (mais pour nous c’est l’amour)"

"Madelon" was a popular WWI song about a good-natured beer-serving maiden who "stays true to the whole regiment" (French text & mp3; English translation & mp3).
Poilu was the nickname of the common French soldier, who was cherished as a hero but often suffered from poverty, unemployment and dissatisfaction long into the "roaring" 20's.

The French in Love and War by Charles Rearick is a great book about popular culture in France between 1914 and 1945.
I recommend it to everyone who wants to know more about the background to the world of Goldenbird.

Scene 4. "Daddy, What did You do in the Great War?" ->>> Page 2.
